IREALP celebrates 100 years of the Bernina Railway

IREALP celebrates 100 years of the Bernina Railway

Declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, the Bernina line is the highest Alpine crossing throughout Europe and one of the steepest natural adhesion railways in the world, capable of uniting countries and bringing cultures together.

IREALP, Research Institute for Ecology and Economy applied to Alpine areas, in line with its objectives promoting and enhancing the territory with a view to sustainable development, is happy to collaborate with the municipality of Tirano by making available the resources and skills of its Valtellina office to celebrate this important mountain engineering feat that celebrates its first 100 years.

The full programme of events scheduled in the town of Tirano (see attachment) was presented during a press conference held on Wednesday 21st  April at the Town Hall of the Valtellina municipality. Among those present were the President of the province of Sondrio Massimo Sertori, the President of the Government of the Canton of Grisons Claudio Lardi, the Chairman of Credito Valtellinese (bank) Giovanni De Censi and the Mayor of Tirano Pietro del Simone.

In this context, IREALP, in collaboration with the Cittaslow International Co-ordination Committee, has organised a "behind closed doors" workshop on the themes of the new certification and Cittaslow projects in developing countries and a meeting of the International Co-ordination Committee. These meetings will be held on 7th and 8th May in the Tirano Cittaslow, which has been a member of the Italian co-ordination since 2009, an organisation which internationally promotes and enhances par-excellence food and wine, culture and local tradition.

The meeting with the International Delegates of Cittaslow will be an important contact opportunity for IREALP also in order to develop possible future synergies with the Lab.Ter. of Chiuro (www.irealp.it/it-it/home/aree/lab_ter).

IREALP, always aiming to develop and promote the mountain,  its identity and its local peculiarities, has also prepared a photographic display of  shots from the "Bernina" which narrate the beauty of the Alps through the views presented by the passing of the train. The exhibition is organised by IREALP in collaboration with the Circolo Fotografico Città di Sondrio [City of Sondrio Photographic Circle] (www.cfsondrio.it), the Municipality of Tirano and Ferrovie Retiche. The exhibition, held at Porta Poschiavina in Tirano (www.comune.tirano.so.it), will be open to the public from 8th to 16th May 2010.
